There’s no such thing as a great outfit without great accessories. Whether it’s an investment-worthy handbag or a pair of statement-making sunglasses, those carefully styled details are the backbone of every expertly curated wardrobe. Of course not all accessories are created equally; some have the power to transform a simple pair of jeans and a T-shirt into a work of art, and others fall short of sartorial success. In a quest to discover the very best accessories to buy for the spring and summer 2023 season, we reached out to the people who study the trends for a living. From Mytheresa’s buying team to Net-a-Porter’s market director, read on to unearth the accessories that are going to have a major moment come spring.
“Sculptural heels in metal or high-definition colors add a little piece of art to your shoe wardrobe. Key styles this season include Ferragamo’s iconic logo sculptural heels and gold hardware heels from Bottega Veneta, JW Anderson and Alaia.
A chic carry-all tote is a great wardrobe investment piece. For spring, there is a lot of versatility in fabric treatments and textures being offered. We love the raffia tote from Loewe and the rubber Bottega Veneta tote in a pop shade of green.
Everyone’s favorite ballerina flats are back in novelty fabrics like the denim styles from Larroudé and mesh embellished crystal slip-ons from Khaite. It’s a seasonless classic style that perfectly transitions from spring to summer.
Bold, chunky jewelry pieces offer a great accent and statement for your look, allowing you to play around with layering and proportions. We love the gold stackable cuff bracelets from Jennifer Fisher that complement any look.”—Roopal Patel, SVP, fashion director, Saks Fifth Avenue

“The much-loved ballet trend continues into summer as the perfect city to beach transitional flat. The barely-there strappy sandal style is a welcome throwback to the ’90s. The appeal of the barely-there sandal is in its versatility, pairing well with everything from jeans and a T-shirt to cocktail attire. We love this style as a kitten heel or summer-time flat. Bottega Veneta’s new Andiamo bag sums up the ‘Quiet Luxury’ mood of the moment. Plus, nothing says summer more than a great basket tote! My favorites come done with a hit of color like Jacquemus and Loewe or natural leathers like Valentino and Brother Vellies. I’m also loving the return of silver hardware—be it a touch on the closure of a Khaite belt or all-out metal hoops.”—Rickie De Sole, women’s fashion director, Nordstrom

“For spring, loafers are the never-out-of-fashion shoe that has somehow managed to become more in now than ever before. Swap chunky soles for slim, light, and elegant silhouettes, which are perfect for springtime. These Gucci loafers feel very Italian Riviera. Oval sunglasses aren’t quite as sharp as a cat eye nor quite as bold as a round shape; this is the new style to know. Statement pumps with a subtle architectural element add a little something for every day wear. They’re also a great trans-seasonal item for the office. The weekender is the new everyday bag: bags have been getting more and more oversized, so why not just upgrade to a weekender style? Metier is a favorite and The Row’s Margaux tote is still a bestseller.
Elevation has been the buzzword of the season, so expect all basket bags to have impeccable leather and gold hardware details this summer. This summer is all about the leather wedge—not raffia, cork, or espadrille. It’s simple, chic, and great for city or summer dressing. The sports bag is light, easy, and barely there. This is for those carefree summer days or if you need your essentials close by. And move over floppy, oversized raffia styles. The sculptural raffia hat is the clean, sharp, statement-making pieces.”—Libby Page, market director, Net-a-Porter

“Embrace the summer season and invest in a fun statement piece; opt for Anya Hindmarch’s Fanta straw and leather tote bag or Loewe’s Petal 90 leather sandals (which form part of Matches’ 5 Carlos Place Loewe installation at the moment).

The best of the best are from Birkenstock; the Milano with gold buckle detail is the pair I will be investing in. They are a brilliant update for the woman who has every style of Birkenstocks. The Row Kris and Bow sandals are such a chic investment for a more minimal summer look. Gabriela Hearst’s gold Striker sandal and Jil Sander’s buckled flat sandal are also great holiday investments.
Luxurious but almost unidentifiable bags will continue to be a trend this summer; look to Lemaire’s Crossiant, Demellier’s Vancouver, the Metier Incognito, The Row Margaux and Park tote, Toteme’s T-Lock, and Bottega Veneta’s Andiamo for understated pieces that offer versatility and longevity.
Coming soon to Matches, Adidas x Wales Bonner offer the perfect, everyday fashion sneakers that still feel understated. The Row’s Owen, Loewe Flow, and Commes des Garçon x Spalwart all offer super chic options and look great styled with a summer dress.”—Liane Wiggins, head of womenswear, Matches

“Clean, luxurious shopper totes and top handle bags are the key silhouettes this season. The Row and their chic Margaux Tote, Alaïa’s new supersized version of their classic Mina Tote, and Saint Laurent’s must-have Icare bag are all timeless staples.

Hot pinks are a trend that we will see across all categories this season and is a super popular color for your new It bag. Valentino has been leading this trend for a few seasons already with their new icon bag Loco, but we also see candy pinks coming through from cute mini bags at Jacquemus as well as neon pinks in the classics, like Sac De Jour and Niki from Saint Laurent.
Our classic high summer bags and accessories are re-imagined with color, crochet, and craftwork this season; for example, the amazing Loewe Paula’s Ibiza includes cute fish raffia bags, sequins, and tassels. We see lots of color on raffia totes from Chloé, and ruffle straw totes with super-sized sun hats were the highlight of Jacquemeus’s Raphia runway collection.
The hype around mask-shaped sunglasses continues, with cool sporty shades coming from Balenciaga, Gucci, Dior Eyewear, and Celine leading the way.
We hit the candy store this season, with pastel-colored stones and gems being a key highlight in fine jewelry. We love the large colorful precious stones from Ileana Makri, the mix of gemstones and diamonds at Mateo, and the endless rainbow of stones at Suzanne Kalan.
Bucket hats and baseball caps are still on trend this season, with your must-haves coming from Jacquemus and Loewe, but we adore the cowboy styles from Ukrainian hat brand Ruslan Baginsky for a unique standout style.
We have experienced a great few seasons with eye-catching ‘puffy’ accessories. Fun fashion items like these generally do very well for us, as our customers love to have newness and statement items that are unexpected. Of course, this isn’t for everyone and every day, but it is a treat for all the die-hard fashion fans. The Loewe balloon leather sandals are a perfect example of the popular trend. I anticipate the need for the ‘wow-factor’ item to continue into summer with swimwear, sunglasses, and beach totes that all make a statement.”—Tiffany Hsu, vice president of fashion buying, womenswear, and kidswear, Mytheresa

"There’s something to be said about a stunning pair of earrings or the perfect necklace, and that certainly includes the gold drop earrings from Bottega Veneta. Silver jewelry is also having a major moment, so look no further than Vivienne Westwood.

A timeless belt can pull together any outfit, and some of my favorites include the Classic Belt from The Row or the Julius Belt from Khaite.
A great tote is clearly always in-season as we see them going strong all spring, and into summer. Minimalists will absolutely adore the Park Tote from The Row. And if we look at the handbag category as a whole, Lemaire continues to top our lists with its ever-popular Croissant Bag, while those of us looking to elevate our outfits with a touch of the unexpected will surely appreciate the Sardine from Bottega Veneta.
Last but not least, we’re all about the low-top sneakers this summer. New Balance is killing it, and Rick Owens found runaway success with pink low top sneakers that sold out almost immediately."— Brigitte Chartrand, vice president of womenswear, Ssense

“Beach bags are no longer an afterthought: the days when you’d retrieve an old and battered beach bag are gone. Designer brands such as Saint Laurent, Valentino Garavani, and Khaite have made beach bags not to miss! And The Row’s Allie is the quiet luxury bag of the season.
Delicate and effortless, Khaite’s Linden slingback sandals are a must-have for minimalism with a twist, thanks to the embellished anklet and angled heel. You can never go wrong with sparkles, whether in the form of glittered PVC sandals or jewelry-like straps on Jimmy Choo’s heels.
For sunglasses, Jacquemus offers a vintage shape with a touch of novelty given by the brand’s signature logo..”—the LuisaViaRoma team

“Everyone needs this Bottega clutch for summer—it’s a great neutral and can be worn anywhere from a relaxing day poolside to a fun night out. We love a good bandana print and this shape is reminiscent of the ’90s. It’s super cute for a night out with friends. A tote will always be a closet must-have and we love this pop of color for the summer. It’s a perfect bag for any day-to-day essentials you need and ideal for a beach day. The half-rim cat eye silhouette is a fun new shape we like for the summer. It’s sleek, simple, and eye-catching. We’re obsessed with Miu Miu’s take on a summer thong. It’s fun, fresh, and a strong statement for any look you pair it with.”—April Koza, vice president, FWRD

“From colored gemstones and mixed metals to whimsical designs and unique cuts, if you love jewelry as we do, summer is your time to shine. This magic mushroom necklace by Brent Neale is both whimsical and timeless. The colorful sapphires are the perfect pop against the onyx and moonstone. Plus, nothing says summer like a colorful beaded strand around the neck. This luxe turquoise option from Jacquie Aiche features a gorgeous pave and opal inlay center detail that we love. And this Zoe Chicco emerald cut curb chain bracelet is the perfect summer staple with a pop of color and a timeless style; you never have to take it off. Lastly, Sorellina combines two of our favorite summer trends in one design: colorful gemstones and statement style. This one-of-a-kind nomad ring is for summer but also forever.”—Alex Lippin, svp, jewelry, Elyse Walker

“Bright color, beachy texture, and a compact new shape—the Loewe Mini tote checks all the boxes for the perfect vacation bag. Velvet in Summer? We say yes. The Mini Goya packs a punch of color in plush padded velvet. Raffia is taken to new heights with these platforms that will be perfectly playful with all of your vacation looks. Le Loafer is a must-have, seasonless shoe. The pearl-neutral is perfect with denim shorts and an oversized linen blazer. Our favorite ’90s silhouette is reinterpreted for Spring/Summer in airy cotton canvas with brown leather details. With its wide, braided raffia straps, a cushioned footbed and rubber-gripped sole, this sandal of the season is begging to be worn all summer long. Summer should be fun! These Bottega Veneta sunnies in green give you just enough drama while being undeniably cool. Colored lenses are all the rage, so you can sport these shades lunching and poolside lounging. Ecru in color and bold in shape, these will easily become your go-to shades.”—Lauren Glass, senior buyer, handbags, shoes, accessories, Elyse Walker
